April Series: Answering the Question “Whatcha Reading?”
Just a reminder that I am participating in CSS Naked Day, so my blog will probably look a little bit odd if you are visiting on April 9, 2008! (Please take a minute to read my original post on why I am joining web designers all over the world today to observe CSS Naked Day!)

The first of a series of questions about random stuff. I ask the question, and answer it, and hope that you will answer, too.
This inquiry was originally posed by Lorelle on WordPress almost two months ago, but I just found it there today and, as a tip of the hat to Lorelle, would like to continue it here.
Related: If you are a member of IVAA, there is an area on that group’s discussion forum inviting you to swap books with other members, so stop by there to check it out.
What I read:
I love a wide variety of fiction, books about baseball (non fiction), and technical how-to books that relate to my work.
What I am reading right now
Looking over at the night stand (you can see it in the picture above right!) and on the book stand on my desk I see these:
- Guys, Dolls and Curveballs Damon Runyon on Baseball, edited by Jim Reisler
- One of my dozen or so journals (most I write in, some get rotated to my nightstand so I can actually read what I wrote in them)
- Photoshop Wow Book CS/CS2, by Linnea Dayton and Cristen Gillespie
- Mothering Mother, by Carol D. O’Dell
- Another Journal of mine (I didn’t know that was even in the stack)
- The Chocolate and Coffee Bible, by Catherine Atkinson, Mary Banks, Christine France, and Christine McFadden
- CSS Pocket Reference, an O’Reilly book by Eric A. Meyer
- CSS The Missing Manual, an O’Reilly book by David Sawyer McFarland
- Ines of My Soul, by Isabel Allende
What I have recently finished reading:
- The Shadow Catcher, by Marianne Wiggins
- Dollar Sign on the Muscle The World of Baseball Scouting, by Kevin Kerrane
- The Teammates, by David Halberstam
What I expect to pick up next:
The next title in The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series: The Miracle at Speedy Motors.

Wow, that’s an interesting collection of books you are reading. I’m usually one-book-at-a-time person, though I didn’t used to be. I love books, so this has been a favorite challenge of mine. I love knowing what others are reading. Thanks!

Lorelle,
I always start out TRYING to read one book at a time but fail every time. I guess I approach everything I do the same way, all-at-once syndrome.
It is fascinating to know a) that people do read (surprising how many people I know do not) and then b) what they read, as you said.
I wouldn’t be able to fall asleep without some reading time first and ditto waking up.

A comment submitted by email, from Shirley B.:
I have several books going at the same time, too. In the morning, I have a kind of literary breakfast buffet mostly non fiction. I tend to read fiction later in the day. I’ve just finished Walking in Circles Before Laying Down by Merrill Markoe, and Windy City by Scott Simon.

Hi Katie…I notice you enjoy reading a wide variety of books. So do I. It’s my main hobby after my Macs and OS X. If you haven’t read it, a great book, in my opinion, is “Water for Elephants” by Sara Gruen. The setting is the early thirties and how a veterinarian got a job with a traveling circus. What a good read….Jim Hamm
