Break Open a New Market

Specializing was the trend of the past five years in the Virtual Assistance Industry. Most of us start as generalists and then progress to narrowing down the industries we prefer to serve as well as the services we wish to offer.

It makes sense on many levels: honing your skills, having to stay current in fewer software packages, and many of us have experienced the Laws of Attraction when we whittle down our service lists. Though we fear chopping tasks from that list, almost miraculously new work from the right sector shows up in our inbox.

But then what?

After 11 years as a VA, and about 6 years of specialization, fortunate to be working with a very stable and delightful group of clients, I am facing a little bit of … how can it be put delicately: ennui? Same old-same old. I don’t want to return to the days of trying to be everything to every client, but I need to punch the big REFRESH button on life’s browser window.

So, a few posts ago I mentioned a new market I am interested in exploring (See “Words of Wisdom“). What followed was a great conversation with someone who offered to make some concrete suggestions on how I could actually tap into that market.

Have YOU faced this dilemma?

Is it just another motivation challenge?

Could it be because many of my peers are announcing their retirement and I am …. not?

Let’s talk about what to do when you want to do something else.
