A week ago today, our youngest was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels. It’s not the first time our family has been affected by the MLB Amateur Draft, but we could tell this was probably going to be the one time that it really mattered. Most visitors to Loosely Speaking probably don’t care, but I’m [...]

Paradoxically speaking: I had finally resigned myself to a long term, perhaps permanent, work slowdown and was halfway into retirement planning when, the next week, my inbox delivered a slew of new projects. I love, love, love my 5-year-old loan-free Tundra, but my personal energy efficiency czar (also known as my husband) is leaning on [...]

What a thrill for Ryan Perry, who was throwing for the University of Arizona Wildcats this time last year! The 22-year-old has made the Detroit Tigers opening day roster after having been selected by the Tigers in the first round in the MLB Amateur Draft last June. I can’t say I know him, but my [...]

No, I’m not a sports writer, just a big fan. Division I College baseball starts today, February 19, 2009, which happens to be my birthday. I love February. To commemorate the beginning of the season, Tom Check gave me permission to display this great photo. See more of Tom’s photography on his blog. Wherever you [...]

It makes sense on many levels: honing your skills, having to stay current in [...]

It was a windy one in Tucson this weekend when Arizona and ASU finished up their seasons with a terrific 3-game series. Even better for our ‘Cats: they took the series after dropping the opener on Thursday night. While in Tucson we met a delightful couple from Grenoble, France, who were also guests at the [...]

Our son covers the hot corner for the UA Wildcats. Imagine my interest in discovering that at Sancet Stadium’s Kindall Field, the rowdy student section is populated by kids wearing “Hot Corner” tee shirts, and some in fake beards. When asked about the beards, we are told simply, “they are Beards for Baird.” These fans [...]

University of Arizona’s baseball season home opener was yesterday and things started with a bang. Thanks Wes, Nate, Benny and Jay for coming down. Unforgettable evening with family, big crowd and great weather. Congratulations to Coach Andy Lopez who picked up his 900th win. Baird’s grand slam lifts No. 1 baseball; Lopez earns win No. [...]

A few random musings on baseball matters that do not reference steroids or the Mitchell Report: I’m looking for best uses for old baseballs. Kind of like Hints from Heloise, but maybe with more of a Hank Aaron twist? We have a buckets of these old baseballs sitting around our place and now that our [...]
