First Apple Pie of the Season

makingpie.jpgBaking has little or nothing to do with blogging, except maybe that both are done with creativity and love.

I know it’s October when I bake my first apple pie of the season, since it’s usually made for my husband’s birthday. After that, there will be many more pies throughout the fall and winter, but the first is the best. The joy is not only in that wonderful fragrance but also in the feel of the crust while rolling it out. The stickiness of peeling and coring so many apples and watching the whole creation take shape.

Where I live, the weather turns cool about now, leaves drop, and you can smell wood smoke in the morning when stepping outside to pick up the newspaper and checking to see if the remaining annual flowers and veggies have succumbed to frost. The furnace might kick on in the night, and evenings begin to take on that cozy feel that revisits us every fall.

A hiker in the woods this time of year needs to remember that the space is shared with hunters.

firstpieb.jpgLike bread making (the old fashioned way, not the kind from a machine). Or knitting a swatch of that new, perfect skein of yarn that will be a pair of mittens for a dear friend.

We do these things with others in mind, and with love in our hearts. I think it’s got to be the same with blogging for it to ring true. Wherever you live, I hope you get to enjoy a homemade pie in the coming days, too.
