Need a Reason to Take Some Time off?

Katie Baird imageMany self-employed people struggle with taking time off. My annual “winter holiday” allows me to rejuvenate my outlook while refreshing the various cobwebby parts of my mind. Even though I am on leave from the office, I find that a number of office tasks get moved into the forefront:

  • Review my backup process
  • Get up to speed on my software arsenal by reading a backlog of forum posts and newsletters
  • Take a few tutorials
  • Attend a workshop or two
  • Schedule a few networking get-togethers
  • Plot out the direction I want my blog to go in the coming year
  • Learn some new skills

Most of these tasks are things I find I just can’t get to during the normal work week. Taking an at home vacation slows everything down a little and allows me to feel caught up when it’s over.

Not that I spend all of every day of my holiday in the office! After all, a nice long holiday is the perfect time to spend some time with a grandchild playing “Lite Brites!”

  1. I use the Christmas/New Year period in the same way – time to take stock and renew.

I’ve just tagged you in a meme. See http://vadirectory.net/blog/2008/02/09/7-weird-things-about-me/ for full details!

    Cheers, Kathie

  2. Hi Kathie,

It’s good to hear from you. I am such an advocate of R&R that I forget at times that there just isn’t always time to take any when you are younger and have a young family or are building your career. It’s easy to forget what that’s like when you’re in your fifties! (hmmm… born in the fifties and now living my fifties, interesting!)

I appreciate the tag but I think that one already came through here. I doubt anyone wants to read that much more about me! But the one I did previously is here.

    Happy weekend.

  3. (Feb. 6 post) Great Post.

How easy it is to get caught up in the many details of promoting and managing the business, as well as trying to improve skills and knowledge.

There’s nothing like those “holidays” and mind-clearing weekends.

BTW, your “style tips” are great reading

  4. Hi Aretha,

    Thank you for visiting.

I guess holidays in the extreme could lead to retirement. I have heard at least one news analyst say we need to be very careful about taking time off right now, due to the economy.

BTW, your name is the name of the artist I listen to most often!
