Acceptance & Amends
I don’t watch daytime T.V. I’m kind of a snob about it, actually, since I did get caught up in it about 25 years ago and found it very difficult to resist. After a couple of years, I broke that addiction. I consider that one of my greatest feats, considering what a grip daytime has on its viewers.
It could be said that I simply replaced that addiction with another one - reading. Like millions of others, I was very affected by the book A Million Little Pieces and was stunned at the news of embellishments and falsehoods which broke over the last couple of weeks.
A column in yesterday’s paper led me to review the Smoking Gun findings, and that in turn lead me to turn on Oprah (whom I admire immensely) yesterday afternoon. I had to see the outcome of Jame’s Frey’s return to her studio. The pundits will have analyzed this segment thoroughly by the time anyone reads my remarks, so I won’t go there.
Winfrey offered a sincere apology and clearly understands the effect of her immense influence on those who embraced the book. Frey probably has a some work ahead of him before he’ll feel any true sense of redemption. It’s a golden opportunity for all of us to reflect on our own mistakes and amends we may or may not have made.
Meanwhile, one of my favorite columnists recently published a companion series on things done right and things done wrong during 2005. These pertain to business organization and planning, and you can link to that here. May you find inspiration there to make sure your 2006 is all that it could be.
