Mark, who knew opening a file would take two days' time, right? Glad you solved it and hope our conversation goes on to help someone else in the same pickle.

Hello KT,
Well I finally managed to work it out! Although trying to udate to Mac Office 11.5 from the Micros**t website was singularly unsuccessful, I did manage to update directly from the Automatic Updater app within the Office suite. I then had to reinstall the Open XML Converter and now I can actually open an xlsx file!
Yay

That's enough to make a person crazy. Mark, if you do find a solution that works for Mac Office 11.2.3, please come back and share it.

I found this "solution" also. However, firstly the updater would not update my version of Mac Office (currently 11.2.3). Then the Open XML converter tells me it is no longer current nad would not even open!
